Is there a way to check whether or not the stereo channels are lined up properly in Gold Wave? I mean, so they're both at equal volumes.
Yeah, sort of.
I don't know of any way to "check" what you've got, but you can make them even.
It's been a long time since I've done it, but I know you hit alt+c to bring up your effects menu and arrow up to stereo and hit enter. It's somewhere in that group. I think it's called "max match" or something like that.
Next time I'm in goldwave I'll check it out and post it here.

Yes it's called MaxMatch, and here's what the manual says about it:
MaxMatch
This command automatically balances the left and right channels and maximizes the volume levels. Essentially, this effect uses the Match Volume effect internally on the left and right channels, then uses the Maximize Volume effect.
After processing, the left and right channels will have the same average volume level and at least one channel will have full dynamic range (1.0 or 0dB). Note that it is rarely possible for channels to have the same average and both have full dynamic range at the same time. Typically one channel will have a dynamic range of slightly less than 1.0 or 0dB.

Thankya sir.
Also, if you're just wondering what you've got, use the jaws cursor once you've selected max match and it'll show you each channel's peek, and the time at which it was reached.
I've got a question. I'm an avid user of Audacity, and am about to start learning Reaper with the ReAccess software. is there any reason to use Goldwave if I am comfortable with Audacity?
I know not.
I've used audacity a few times to get certain effects that goldwave doesn't have.
The major advantage that goldwave has is that its totally accessible where audacity is almost totally accessible.
